In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s interpretation of this ancient Greek myth. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings. Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as her fearsome mother, Klytämnestra – the object of Elektra’s fury. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the extraordinary cast headed by Nina Stemme who portrays the obsessed and bloodthirsty Elektra. Strauss’s penetrating tragedy about a Greek princess hell-bent on revenge comes to the Met in the final opera production by the legendary director Patrice Chéreau, who died in 2013.
